got a question?
What should you do before your procedure?
-
Please confirm your procedure date with Dr Jehle’s rooms. It is also important to confirm the time when you should be at the hospital to go through the admission process. Remember to have your identity document as well as medical aid information with you.
-
You will need to pay fees for the hospital before or on admission. It is best to do an Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT) via your bank sufficiently in advance.
-
You will need to pay the surgeon, Dr Jehle, and the anaesthetist one week before your procedure.
-
You should also make Dr Jehle aware of any drug allergies. You should stop any blood thinning agents such as aspirin, clopidogrel, warfarin, XARELTO (rivaroxaban).
-
You should not eat or drink anything for six hours prior to your procedure.
-
You will be asked to sign a consent form and return this to Dr Jehle's office prior to the surgery. This states that you agree to have the treatment and you understand what it involves. If you would like more information about the procedure, it’s best to contact Dr Jehle well ahead of your admission.
-
You will need to arrange a lift home after discharge – you may not drive after anaesthetics.
-
Patients travelling from further afield are advised to stay in Cape Town for 1-2 days after the surgery to recuperate before travelling back home.
What happens immediately after your procedure?
-
You will be transferred to the ward from the operating theatre. You are encouraged to rest until the effects of the anaesthetic have worn off. Let the nursing staff know if you are in discomfort.
-
You should eat and drink something before leaving the hospital. The procedure is usually done as a day-case so you will be able to go home on the same day.
-
Please ensure that you have pain tablets or a prescription for pain medication. Wearing your scrotal support (jock strap) post-operatively and applying ice packs to the scrotum will minimise swelling.
-
In most cases after the micro-TESE procedure, you will be contacted by the embryology team at the fertility clinic within a few days to confirm presence or absence of sperm from the harvest.
-
In the case of vasectomy reversal procedure, you will need to perform a semen analysis after two months to establish whether there are sperm in the ejaculate.
-
In the case of vasectomy procedure, you should continue to use contraception for up to three months. Thereafter, a semen sample should be taken at the laboratory to check whether the semen is free of live and dead sperms.
don't try to be a hero
We ask that men avoid sex, masturbation, or vigorous exercise for at least 10 days after the surgery.
What should I expect when I get home?
Most men are surprised by the minimal amount of pain they have after this surgery. The scrotum is one of the fastest healing parts of the body and the multi-layered closure technique used helps to make sure that men do not have infections or bleeding after the surgery. There will be sutures on the skin of your scrotum that will eventually dissolve after 2-3 weeks, leaving little or no scar. We ask that men avoid sex, masturbation, or vigorous exercise for at least 10 days after the surgery.
